This house is a delightful twenty minute walk (five minutes by car) from the ancient and tiny hilltop village of Acqualoreto and many neighboring villages like it: with timeless houses, churches and traditions. All are set in the beautiful, rolling countryside of Umbria. Some, like Acquasparta, are large enough to have concerts and open film shows throughout the summer. Nearby Todi has a music festival in the summer and is one of the most lovely small towns in Italy. In the area are many interesting places to visit including Gubbio, Spoleto, Assisi, Perugia, and Orvieto. This peaceful area in Umbria is surprisingly convenient for touring.

La Torre Cupa is a cleverly renovated farmhouse, featuring its own tower, typical of the region. Made of Umbrian stone, the house is three to four hundred years old: it has grown as each generation of peasants added a room here and there: so the floor plan, though not architecturally logical, is delightful and has the advantage of offering differing age groups space and privacy to do their own thing. One is immediately struck by the naturalness and comfort, unaffected and relaxing with all conveniences.

La Torre Cupa is set in undulating fields which drop through the woodland to the Tiber flowing in the valley below. Views are of woods, fields and vineyards flowing over the hill. There is a lovely garden spread on several levels, one of which contains an olive grove. Another level has a stone dining table for al fresco meals, accessed from both the living and dining rooms. The fenced swimming pool sits at the end of the garden, almost out of view of the house. There are neighbors scattered about on the hills, but La Torre Cupa is quite private.

The kitchen at La Torre Cupa

On the ground floor is a modern kitchen, well equipped with a work island and a dishwasher. There is a complete oven, fridge and four burner stovetop. Plenty of room for group cooking projects here: the local open air markets will supply plenty of fresh produce--bring your favorite recipes! There is an adjoining dining room.

Three steps lead up from the kitchen into a large living room with fireplace. Off this room is a small study with views over the hills, a peaceful place for letter writing. From the kitchen entryway two steps lead to a small bath with shower shared by a single and a double bedroom.

There is a central room which has stairs to the second floor: it leads to a balcony/landing ornamented with terracotta containers of plants that hang down to the room below. This area has a large skylight. From this landing one reaches two bedrooms: one very large double with a fireplace and ancient stone sink, the other a smaller twin. Three steps up lead into a large full bathroom. Along the end of the landing another three steps lead to a double bedroom with en suite bath and shower. The floors are all terracotta and most of the rooms have beamed ceilings. The bathrooms are all tiled, clean and modern.

This lovely casa colonica has farmhouse furniture that is pretty and comfortable. The interior of the house is artistically furnished. The owner rates the house as 2.3 (1 being the Ritz) on a scale of 1-5.

The train station in Orvieto is 20 minutes drive away, with easy parking. Rome (61 miles away) train 9:26am arrives 10:20am and to Florence(119 miles) the 8:25 intercity arrives at 9:50am.   Shopping is quite convenient: large supermarkets in both Todi and Orvieto are open all day. Local villages have interesting shops: most close at one o’clock. There are numerous delightful restaurants of varying luxury near and in the surrounding towns.

This casa colonica is British owned; the keyholders are a local couple. Two women come in for a total of eight hours a week to clean. The price is inclusive of cleaning, linens, electric, gas, water, etc: all but telephone usage (metered). A security deposit will be collected on arrival, from which phone charges will be deducted. The owner prefers two week rentals and indeed it is barely enough time to begin to enjoy the offerings and relaxation available at Acqualoreto.
